Sparkler Through Crystal Ball, by Caleb Charland

…Sparkler Through Crystal Ball, cleverly references Dr. Harold Edgerton’s high-speed bullet photographs, but it took Charland minutes to capture the spray of sparks on film, an enormous amount of time compared to Edgerton’s millionth-of-a-second images. In Daniel T. Braun`s seria of “shoot no.1- no.6″ Edgertons scientific high speed photograhy is empazized in a built model. Like a painter or sculptor Daniel T. Braun simulates the moment of the shoot through the apple just with cotton and meal to transcend the phenomenia.

Das “große Ganze”, nicht mehr und nicht weniger, zeigen die Arbeiten Sven Erik Kleins. Erstmals stellt der bei Ulm geborene Künstler seine Werke in Berlin aus. Dafür bevorzugt er riesige Formate, wie bei “Les  tomates”, das den Betrachter geradezu verführt, auf dieses Bild zu, ja hinein zu gehen, um eine der Tomaten selbst zu pflücken. Die Ästhetik verlassener, vernachlässigter Dinge und Orte steht im Mittelpunkt seiner Arbeit. In seiner Berliner Ausstellung wird Klein Teile seiner “Interior Spaces” und neue Landschaftsbilder präsentieren sowie Installationen, die das Rechteckformat sprengen und den Bildraum in den Ausstellungsraum erweitern. Sven Erik Klein setzt in seiner künstlerischen Arbeit auf das Bild an sich. Sein Ansatz ist ganz bewusst nicht seriell oder dokumentarisch. Jede Photographie ein in sich abgeschlossenes Werk, das verführen will zu einer anderen Betrachtungsweise von verlassenen Innenräumen, Landschaften, verrosteten “Seelenverkäufern” oder Gestrüpp. Der Mensch ist nie im Bild und doch präsent. Denn er hat die Brachlandschaften, Fabrikruinen oder Schiffe geschaffen.”faits divers” heißt in der deutschen Übersetzung: “Verschiedenes” oder “vermischte Nachrichten” und ist durchaus ironisch zu verstehen. Denn hinter Kleins Arbeiten steht kein konzeptioneller Überbau, keine dokumentarische Distanz – das Bild wirkt für sich und fügt sich in das ästhetische Gesamtwerk des Photokünstlers ein .Sven Erik Klein hat, nach einem Gaststudium bei Nan Hoover an der Rheinischen Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, an der Hochschule für Gestaltung/ZKM in Karlsruhe Medienkunst bei Marie-Jo Lafontaine, Günter Förg und Candida Höfer studiert. Er lebt und betreibt ein Atelier in Saarbrücken. Neben Einzelausstellungen beispielsweise im Stadthaus Ulm oder dem Goethe-Institut Nancy, war Klein an Gruppenausstellungen wie “Last and Lost” im Literaturhaus München, “Blow Up” im Ulmer Museum oder der Landeskunstausstellung im Saarland beteiligt. 2009 war er Preisträger des Monika-von-Boch-Preises für Photographie.

In difference to Daniel T. Braun, who traces fire by exploding rockets (”Rocketogrames”) through light directly on photographic colorpaper, Rosemarie Fiore is drawing with fireworks on paper. Her brushes are explosives like smoke bombs and magic whips, her colors are the particles of the smoke and the sparcling of the fire.  “She then collages the best effects onto large sheets of the same paper-creating works, that are like op art visions of the cosmos.” [Robert Shuster]. The performative chance of the color application is guided to the finding.

To reflect the media of photography, especially in an analog manner, is still a topic of the “Karlsruher Schule”. The photo-artists absolved the Hochschule für Gestaltung beside the ZKM / center for and media in Karlsruhe. They seem to have found an emancipated way to work with photography in art. Beside the long tradition of the German “Becher Schule” the “Karlsruher photo-school” reanimates photo-art in a creative way. Emerging artists from this school are:

Daniel T. Braun, Andreas Friedrich, Sven Erik Klein, Bettina Metzen and others we are going to post.

A Waterway Journey by Ulay – Patagonia 2009

“…during this expedition, which is one of the pilot-projects of ‘Waterfonie’, we mainly focused on documenting water related issues such as clouds, water, glaciers, ice and icebergs, and testing the mobile phone’s multimedia facilities, in particular photographic- and video recordings. We were equipped with 2 Nokia N82 mobile phones (Carl Zess lens) and a Leica Trinovid 8×20 binocular. The binoculars were at times used as a tele-lens in front of the Nokia camera lens (notice the round images).
